Thanks to everyone who has written to me in the past few weeks with great feedback on the new books. Below are just a few of the many great letters and comments I've received in the past two weeks. I'm really glad that everyone is enjoying the books.
Greg,
I just want you to know how much I value your duet and etude books. They are produced beautifully and are wonderful at teaching style, phrasing, articulation and a general jazz sensibility to my students. The lines you create are also fine examples of approaches to improvising. Besides all the instructional value in your books, the music is fun to play! Add to that your great saxophone playing and the high quality of your rhythm section and I couldn't be more pleased.
Regards, Jeff Jones, Shingletown, California, USA
Hi Greg,
My students and I like the books very much. They are beautifully edited, recorded and played. The structures are very clear, and the etudes are melodic and very educational.
Patrick Milbou, Belgium
AWESOME!!!
--Karl L. Brunson, Ph.D., Leesburg, Virginia, USA
Hi Greg,
The new books are excellent, the usual high standard. I shall enjoy playing them with my students, many of whom I have recommended to buy your books over the past few months.
Would just like to add that one of the most useful from a teaching point of view has been 'Jazz Phrasing for Beginners'.
Keep 'em coming.
Regards
--Geoff Bowles, United Kingdom
Hey Greg,
Two thumbs WAY up for your work. Thank you for making the etudes accessible to guitarists (and C instruments).
Best regards,
John Atkinson, Los Angeles, California, USA
Great duet books! They are interesting, exciting, very melodic and a useful tool for building sax skills! (And they are FUN to play!!)

User Comments on Hip Licks...
The answer to my thinking "I need to develop a catalog of transcribed jazz phrases." Greg's already done it and it gives me a big head start.... heard him play a couple weeks ago, he said the book is a product of years of playing. Really great sounding licks. --Bob G in Tucson, AZ This will revolutionize my playing. A must for any modern saxophonist. Especially the licks with the dominant flat 9s, and the "Juju" augmented triads are fabulous. --Andrew Fawcett in the U.K.
I just spent most of the day playing and digesting your material in what I believe to be the best book you've ever done. I know my students couldn't believe their ears today during their lessons. The comments were mostly about two things;
1. They can't believe the wonderful ideas you created, and 2. Everyone enjoyed the challenges they presented.
One student even called you "Sick"-LOL. Thanks so much for all you continually do for jazz education and for sharing your creative mind. --Jimmy Haag, in Las Vegas, NV
This is for all saxophone players. Whether you are a professional or a beginner. I just got my copy of Greg Fishman's Hip Licks for Saxophone book. As always, Greg is on point with anything he puts out there. This book is very well thought out and there is enough material to keep anyone trying to improve their jazz vocabulary busy for a few years. There are 168 licks. If memorized no musical situation will ever be uncomfortable. This book set is truly amazing and should be viewed by all players. If you don't know Greg Fishman please look into his works. He has written a bunch of wonderful books, and all can enjoy learning from them. --Mike Schoentag, in Nevada
Great book! Not just the licks for practicing, which will be great material for me, but Greg and the rhythm section sound GREAT. --John Temmerman, in Illinois
Hip Lick's for Saxophone is absolutely the Most Fun I ever had with any book. It is clever, challenging and extremely hard not to play for hours. --Rocco S. Muriale, in West Virginia
I got the Hip Licks book today! It's AWESOME!!! I haven't had that much fun practicing in a long time! My sight-reading was getting better in just the hour or so I played through the book! And my ear is definitely going to get better as I work through the tracks. I really enjoyed doing the call and response thing with you. The licks really do lay under my fingers very comfortably. I actually started to get a glimpse into what it must feel like to play like Sonny Stitt :-) And OMG the fast tempo disk is unbelievable!! You're technique is incredible. I put it in my CD player just to hear it and the CD player began smoking and started to melt! LOL --Bobbi King, in California
From legendary saxophonist, educator and author Jerry Coker:
Hi Greg:
Let me congratulate you on your new book, Hip Licks. Its excellent! You use the elements in a wide variety of ways, and always placed within longer, more continuous lines, all of which are very helpful to players who have trouble acquiring ways to incorporate the elements into longer, more complete, and more variegated lines.
I have introduced excerpts from the book, and their CD demos to the saxophonists Im currently teaching privately, and all of them want the book.
Love in Christ, JC

Tasting Harmony is designed to teach your ear to focus on the sound of each individual chord tone
while simultaneously hearing the full chord. This is a new approach to ear-training, utilizing the concept
of synesthesia; the mixing of the senses.
Tasting Harmony doesn't just train your ear to hear roots, 3rds, 5ths, #5ths, 6ths, 7ths, b9's, #9's, 11ths, #11ths and
13ths...It provides professional piano accompaniment for all chord types, in all keys...Maj7, Dom7, Min7, Min
w/Maj7, Min7b5 and Dim7 chords.
Finally, you can practice all of your chords and scales with a professional pianist (on a 7 foot Yamaha concert grand,
brilliantly recorded) and really hear the full chords as you play your favorite chords and licks.
In addition, you can work on flawless intonation by tuning up to the fantastic vocalist, Petra van Nuis (pictured on the
cover).
Want to take it to the next level? Let Petra sing the 9th while you play the 7th of the chord. Everything is in the circle of
fourths, so it's easy to practice every single chord tone.
Latest user comments on "Tasting Harmony"...
Many thanks for your great work on the Tasting Harmony; Ive been recommending that book to everyone!
Ive been working out with the exercises several times a week (I like to play licks - ascending & descending -
off the given note); and Im finding that my ears are really opening up on the gigs. It feels like the harmony is
moving in slow motion, and I feel like I have more time to internalize the progression and react to the music.
Many Thanks!

I have received many requests from fans of "Tasting Harmony" to upload examples of myself playing along

Tasting Harmony trains your ear in many ways. In addition to singing (or playing) along with Petra on the
play-along CD, there are many other ways to utilize this brand new book.
Tasting Harmony is an important part of my own practice routine. With the tracks below, you can hear how
to use the book to work on your intervals (hearing Petra sing a note while you play a different note), chord

Customer Feedback on "Jazz Saxophone Etudes" by Greg Fishman:
Hi Greg!
My name is Dan Cannistraci. I am a freshman at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA studying under Dave Rickenberg. Dave recommended I purchase your book, Jazz Saxophone Etudes, to use in his lessons. I have never seen a jazz etude book nearly as good as yours! I have played out of a lot of etude books and many of them consist of notes slapped onto a page in accordance with chord symbols. In contrast, every track in your book has strong melodic and rhythmic notions to it, making the book an absolute joy to play. It really gets you into the song when you have a strong melody line to go off of, and I think that is the greatest strength of "Jazz Saxophone Etudes." Thank you for such a great piece of jazz literature, I'm having an awesome time playing from it!

NOW AVAILABLE -- Jazz Saxophone Etudes, Volume 3 (Intermediate Level) by Greg Fishman
This new book features twelve melodic etudes for the advancing jazz saxophonist. These etudes
focus primarily on medium tempos and demonstrate a melodic approach to soloing with authentic
jazz vocabulary. The etudes are catchy, fun to play, and written idiomatically for the saxophone.
Like my previous books, all saxophonists (soprano/alto/tenor/bari) read the same written part,
ensuring that the pieces lay perfectly on the horn, while the rhythm section transposes the
accompaniment to accommodate the saxophonist's range.
If you enjoyed Jazz Saxophone Etudes, Volume 1 & 2, you'll love this new book. While my first
two books focused on faster tempos, Jazz Saxophone Etudes, Volume 3 features mostly medium
tempos. This new book includes ten Bebop etudes and two Bossa Nova etudes, as well as a section
on style and analysis and practice suggestions.
Whether you're a beginning, intermediate or advanced player, you'll definitely have fun with this new book.

(Swing/Bebop/Bossa) jazz vocabulary. The short, catchy pieces demonstrate how to use sequences
and voice-leading to make a musical statement, while clearly outlining the chord progression,
without the need for advanced technical or reading abilities.

Just a few of many great customer quotes about the new book, "Jazz Phrasing for Beginners":
"I absolutely love this book! I played sax for just a couple of years a long time (35 years) ago and
decided to start playing again earlier this year. Ive been listening to records all that time so I
know how things should sound, but playing that way is another story! Most of the playalongs are
just too fast for a beginner like me to keep up and play accurately but these are perfect; Ive been
able to play even the more difficult ones well with some practice; even the easier ones are very
musical with interesting progressions. My teacher also loves it and is going to start using it with his
other students. This is the most accessible/nonthreatening way to start playing jazz that I have
found. Thanks again!"

"Hi Greg. The book is awesome, just like the other three that I have of yours. The tunes are very well written, and fun to play. --Frank Torres

Jazz Phrasing for Beginners
Reviewed by Raymond Davis
This book is written and produced by an extremely accomplished sax musician. I worked through some of his more advanced books (didn't do that well with those) but the 10 songs and accompanying CD in this book are superb. There is a separate CD for Alto or Tenor Sax. The odd numbered tracks of the CD feature Greg and a great jazz group accompaniment. You hear him play relatively simple songs WITH great articulation and dynamics and musicality. You hear what the song should sound like with a real pro. The second track of the song (even numbers) is just the background group. You get to play Greg's part and try to emulate what an accomplished sax player does. Just like playing with a great jazz group. It's challenging and excellent ear and embouchure training. You strive to achieve sustained, musically pleasant long notes. It builds up your bouchure, vibrato, and forces you to get better at breath control. As I learned five years ago when I started the sax, it's any easy instrument to play; it's a hard instrument to play WELL.
I'm in my 50's--I'm no kid. I played guitar in a professional rock band in my youth--so I have musical talent. I've been playing sax for five years now. I have 10-12 other duet books with CD's which I have learned from and enjoy playing. This book is by far the best for the experience of learning how to judge and improve your sound, get a good feeling for jazz, and the simple enjoyment of playing along with a great jazz group. It's the best $24.95 I have ever spent for a book that will improve my playing IMMENSELY! I used it for about 4 weeks now. Once I master all the nuances of the songs and the playing tips Greg provides in the beginning, I will be able to move on to his more advanced books with confidence.
Thank you Greg for finally putting together this "beginner's" book. You will make me a much better musician. There is hope for my playing.

Jazz Saxophone Etudes, Vol. 3 is now available! This new book is intermediate level, and perfect for all players. Tempos are easier than Vols. 1 & 2, but the concept and the vibe is the same. If you liked Vols. 1 & 2 but wanted some more medium tempos, plus a couple of Bossa Novas, this book is for you. I'm expecting the book to be available for sale by mid-August or early September.

Just Jazz Guitar's rave review of "Jazz Guitar Etudes" by Greg Fishman:
"Jazz Guitar Etudes is an excellent resource for all guitarists and teachers. After releasing a very popular etudes book for jazz saxophone, Greg Fishman collaborated with guitarist Mike Allemena to do a guitar version of the book. The book includes standard notation and tablature. The studies in the book are great written improvised solos over familiar chord progressions such as the blues, rhythm changes, and standards. The book comes with a CD that features a guitar version, a saxophone version, and a rhythm section version of each etude. In addition, Fishman begins the book with concepts in developing jazz lines such as proper voice leading and sequences. The melodic lines are very well designed phrases using the the bebop language. Guitarists can gain so much by playing and analyzing these etudes" --Just Jazz Guitar Magazine E-mail Lessons available now

I encourage the jazz guitar students at the University of North Texas to emulate tenor saxophonists. Greg Fishman's book, Jazz Guitar Etudes, contains idiomatic
bebop lines and will be a great tool for any guitar teacher with aspiring jazz guitarists. Thanks, Greg! Fred Hamilton, professor of jazz guitar, University of North Texas
These are great solos and etudes! I'm always telling my guitar students to learn lines and phrasing from horn players, and Greg Fishman's book is perfect for this approach. The book is nicely done and very well laid out. Corey Christiansen
Professor of Guitar, Utah State University, Visiting Professor, Indiana University
"This book is very well put together and very thorough. It gives guitar students the information necessary to obtain a vocabulary based on the bebop tradition, yet ultimately encourages them to improvise on these structures, creating their own lines and ideas. I commend you on meeting this challenge head-on, and for effectively clarifying these concepts in your liner notes." --Steve Cardenas
Professor of Guitar, The New School, New York City
"The lines are great, the rhythm section is terrific, and I really love the fact that the student guitarist working out of this book gets to play along with both the guitarist on the CD and with your tenor. This book is incredibly well thought out. Congratulations on a fantastic book!" --Jack Peterson, legendary jazz guitar professor (retired) from Berklee and North Texas State

Do you like my books, but think the tempos are just too fast? This product, called, appropriately enough, "Amazing Slow Downer" is the perfect product for you. With this program, you can slow down music and keep it in the same key. Not only can you slow it down to a fraction of the tempo, changing it by just 1% at a time, but you can do all kinds of looping of phrases, and even transposing of phrases.
If all of this wasn't enough, the program will also let you change the key of any recording! If the recording is in F and you want to hear it up a fourth, you can simply move a slider on the computer screen, and you'll hear the song in the new key...any key you want. This is an indespensible practice tool, and I use and endorse this product.

"Hi Greg--just want to let you know that I am thoroughly enjoying the lessons youve provided. I like the fact that I can send mp3s of me playing the assignments and shortly thereafter receive a very thorough and candid critique of my playing. Lessons by email help me out tremendously because I work a full-time job and have two young children. My time is scarce, so any program that allows me to listen to lessons on the go and view assignments electronically is well worth the investment. Since my initial lesson, I have paid more attention to, among other aspects, theory, articulation, swing feel, tone, and phrasing. I enjoy your teaching style and I can really tell you have the knowledge and passion for teaching the jazz language. I look forward to working with you as I continue to reach a personal goal in jazz improvisation.
Also, my wife, co-workers, and I thought it quite cool that you evaluated my playing, sent me mp3s of you playing the examples, and assigned my lessons all while you were on tour in Bangkok. Thanks!"

$75.00 Lesson by E-Mail with Greg Fishman
"As a reading musician who has primarily relied on my ear for more than twenty years to help me through jazz improvisation, I decided it was finally time to get to the next level in my playing. After meeting Greg Fishman at an Aebersold summer jazz workshop and realizing his depth of understanding of and passion for the music, I decided a few months later to pursue on-line lessons with him. Since then, I've been thrilled with the results, as I am now learning to think of the music more in terms of voice-leading and riffs, my technique and speed are going through the roof, and I am becoming much more comfortable with the theory behind the jazz.
Greg's custom teaching style is remarkable, and he does a great job of communicating how to approach practicing the assigned lessons based on my current abilities. I highly recommend web cam lessons with Greg for anyone who wants to become 'one' with the music, yet may not have easy access to a professional instructor of jazz saxophone."

Greg Fishman is a superb improvising instrumentalist who understands and utilizes the elements that have given jazz its unique identity and exciting appeal. That pervasive understanding has been masterfully portrayed in these very practical etudes without overwhelming the user with the need for excessive virtuosity or consummate reading ability. Listening to Greg's demo tracks, then learning to play the etudes with the provided accompaniment tracks will raise considerably the user's musicality and stylistic awareness. I highly recommend his books to anyone who loves jazz enough to want to get in on the action." Jerry Coker
"I greatly enjoyed playing through Greg Fishman's Jazz Saxophone Etudes volume one. Nice, easy to remember melodic compositions that will improve your improvisation. Volume Two looks to be as good or better." Plas Johnson

While teaching at the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, Gary Campbell turned me on to the Rico Jazz Select reeds, and I've been playing them ever since.
These are truly the finest reeds I've ever played. They have incredible depth and warmth, and they play right out of the box, with very little break-in time. I'm playing the Rico Jazz Select 3 Hard, Unfiled reeds.

In September 2007, I had the honor of teaching and perfroming as an artist-in-residence at the University of North Carolina. Jim Ketch, head of the jazz studies program, made all of this possible. In addition to being an incredible trumpeter, Jim is a dedicated educator. I'm looking forward to many more visits to his school. Below are a few of Jim's comments and reflections on my stay at his school.
"Greg Fishman is an outstanding jazz artist and a superb clinician for university, college, and high school jazz programs. Greg has spent years studying the beauty and nuances of jazz expression and his tenor saxophone solos are the logical extension of his vivid aural imagination. He plays what he sings so convincingly. Every chorus is a rich model for study.
The joy in working with Greg is that he has all the intellectual gifts to explain his artistry in very clear terms. His deep love of the music and his total dedication to the art form were simply apparent in every minute of his four day artist residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The audiences were thrilled with Greg's stunningly beautiful improvised solos and my students and I were inspired to work harder and with more intention. Not only would I welcome Greg Fishman back as a guest artist and clinician, I would welcome him as a colleague on the bandstand, on the road, or in a teaching environment."

Just for fun....
This summer, I visited Stan Getz's daughter, Bev, in upstate New York, to talk about a possible new book about Stan's music. Bev is a wonderful person, and she's rehabilitating these previously abused horses. What beautiful animals!
I thought that the horn might scare them, but they loved it! They were completely quiet and still while I played. Alaska, the white horse, was looking right into my eyes as I played. For those curious, I played Johnny Mandel's "Emily." The brown horse is named Charlie.

Below is a letter I received from a customer, Ed Zentera. It's always nice to get a rave review from a critic at a magazine or newspaper, but it means even more to me when praise comes directly from the players who are using my books. Thanks for the kind words, Ed. Glad you're enjoying both books! -Greg Fishman
"Jazz Saxophone Duets" is incredibly deep and rich with opportunities for development for me as a player. Where "Jazz Saxophone Etudes" has helped me better appreciate the importance of the melody in improvisation, "Duets" picks up from there and adds so many extra dimensions to the learning experience - whether there's another player around or it's just me and the material.
Your books and periodical articles have given me a framework to really develop style and confidence in my jazz playing.
I can't thank you enough for putting together these great publications.
All the best to you, Greg.

Jazz Saxophone Duets by Greg Fishman
"This is one of the most concise and easy to digest collection of solos over standard tune chord changes that I have seen. All the elements of good voice leading, passing notes and common scale usage are here. Very enjoyable!!" Dave Liebman
"I have known Greg Fishman for a long time. He has a very analytical mind. He knows how to get in between the cracks to give you what you need musically. This book is a good example of some of what he does. A lot of the students with whom I come in contact will definitively get this book on my recommendation. It looks deceivingly simple, but looks are deceiving. Greg is not only a fantastic saxophonist, he is a marvelous teacher. You cant go wrong with anything that comes from Greg Fishman." James Moody
I wish I had material like this when I was coming up. These etudes are little masterpieces. There is such a wealth of material to learn from here. Great line construction and great conceptual ideas. Having the rhythm section continue after the etude is a great idea! I will be using these with virtually all my students from now on. Greg Fishman has done a terrific job of putting this book together, and the play-along rhythm section is first class! Mark Colby, Depaul University, Elmhurst College
"Your etude book is very well done. I've been using it to teach
phrasing." Bob Sheppard
"This book is a written version of the way jazz is supposed to be taught - learning from a great player who truly understands how to distill the language into clear, understandable terms. Chicago-based saxophonist Greg Fishman has composed a set of etudes based on standard tunes that are one of the best collections of this type I've seen. The lines he composes are textbook versions of postbop saxophone improvising, and will give students at all levels a wealth of material to practice and internalize. Fishman is equally well-versed as a teacher and as a saxophonist - it's a rare combination that is showcased in this book." David Demsey, William Paterson University, Saxophone Journal

Patrick Langham, Associate Professor & Director of Jazz Studies,

Hi Greg!
I think you've got a wonderful product. Jazz Saxophone Etudes has everything I look for in a practice tool. Not only are the etudes full of jazz language, but they're great for analysis, and excellent technique builders/finger movers. I personally look forward to each encounter with a new etude and found on several instances that I felt closer to the horn after using it as a warm-up prior to other things I work on.
As you mentioned to me prior to receiving it, this book is definitely for the
intermediate/advanced student and the possibilities for utilizing it other than sight-reading material are numerous. Lastly, having the concept of two CD's for Bb & Eb respectively (without simply transposing the etudes) was a great idea.
Your book is now a part of my own practice routine and will be added to the work of my students.

Greg, Ive been using the Bob Mintzer and Jim Snidero play-along books now for quite some time, and have always thought they were well written and achieved a good solid feel for the jazz idiom. Although I am praising their books, I must admit that they also replicated their respective authors style and feel. Your book offers a fresh approach to the jazz idiom without sounding like etudes! They are wonderfully written and swing hard. The etudes in your book really capture the essence of the changes. Ive had a ball playing them and sharing them with my advanced students. Both of my thumbs are pointing upward. Let me know when volume two comes out!
Best wishes and warm regards,
Wally West

Hi Greg,
Just a note (no pun intended) to let you know that I have really enjoyed playing the etudes in your book. I bought 4 copies and three of my more advanced students are also enjoying and learning from your book and CDs. I'm telling people about your book and giving them your web sight. I hope the sales are doing well and book 2 is in the horizon.
Thanks for a great teaching tool,
Wayne

Hi Greg
My name is Brad Eastin. I have been working out of your book for a few weeks now and it is great! I recently retired from the USAF Academy Band where I played in The Falconaires Jazz Ensemble. I am currently teaching saxophone/clarinet and jazz studies at Colorado State University Pueblo.
I have had my students working on the etudes and they all love them. Dont be surprised if you start getting orders from the Southern Colorado area. The style and analysis section is extremely helpful. The concept of identifying enclosures has already helped several of my students get a better handle on putting more chromaticism in their playing.
The best thing about the book is that it is applicable to an intermediate student all the way to a seasoned pro. I havent had a text charge up my playing in a while and yours definitely has. I also picked up your Stan Getz transcription book, reconfirming my belief that he was and is the most creative earthling ever to place fingers on the saxophone.
Keep up the good work.
Brad

Often trumpeters who stumble across my stuff on the internet email me with questions about playing and book recommendations. I'm jumping the gun on this with an unsolicted book recommendation.
The book is titled Jazz Saxophone Etudes by Greg Fishman. I bought it because I dabble in tenor sax. However, these are FANTASTIC studies for trumpet! I mean this! FANTASTIC!
If you read them as is, you're dealing with Dizzy range, but not unreasonable. Nothing really above E just over high C (there is one F, but it is only a stab). The lines are gorgeous and imaginative. They'll definitley trigger new ideas in you.
The book comes with two CD's; one with Greg playing the solos, and one with just the rhythm section.
I can't over sell this. If you're looking for some new jazz material to work on, this stuff is just fantastic! Here is Greg's info.

Gerg's stuff is self published, so you'll need to contact him for this stuff, but it will be WELL worth the effort! Fishman is, without a doubt, one of the finest jazz tenor virtuosos out there and his ideas are amazing.
Check it out, but drop my name! He'll get right back to you.
Peace, all!

Greg: Thanks for sending your Jazz Saxophone Etudes so promptly. I managed to get through them on alto and a couple of tunes on tenor. I like the concept of keeping the parts the same and changing keys for the rhythm section. Several of them kicked my butt on a sight reading basis. I'm going to have to practice most of them. Bummer!
Also sent was the Chicago Jazz Magazine with one of your articles about the diminished scale. I would love to share the article with some of my advanced students--if that is okay with you. Also, your playing is outstanding and will be an excellent example for students to emulate. I've have a feeling this book is going to sell well. Have a great summer.

Hi Greg:
I just wanted to let you know that I have been using the book religiously for the past two weeks and I am really enjoying it. I feel that it has been well worth the money. It has certainly expanded my mind, approach and ears.
You really do have a rare gift ... someone who cannot only play, but also communicate and teach the required concepts. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insight.
I also saw a nice review of the book in this month's issue of Saxophone
Journal too, in case you weren't aware of that.
Quick, feedback-wise, my favorite Etude to play from the book is State
Street. I feel as though that's a perfectly lined solo.
Thanks again, Greg. Best wishes to you!
Sincerely,
Greg Balas, Phoenix, AZ

Greg-
You forgot to include a warning with your book that the etudes are insanely catchy! I've got Halsted Street beboppin' through my head throughout the whole day, it seems.
I've been able to progress using the speed control on my CD player usually starting at 50% and working my way up gradually to identify the "hot spots" that require attention.
I see what you mean about good improv stemming from a good melodic line. No wonder your etudes are so catchy! A hell of a lot more fun than Voxman studies...

Hi Greg,
I am enjoying your book alot! The etudes lie pretty well on the oboe, and certainly give us oboists exposure to bebop. I especially like your explanations at the front of the book, and your recommendations for practicing.
I am going to recommend your book to my aspiring jazz students.
Excellent work, beautiful book, and good training for aspiring players!!!
Thanks,
Barbara
